Healthy Habits for Life: Pass It On
Healthy Habits for Life: Pass It On HHL: Pass It On is designed to teach children the importance of healthy habits and living a healthy lifestyle while encouraging them to share what they've learned with their friends and families and everyone they know. The program features mentoring and engages approximately fifty second grade students at Fern Creek Elementary. Students will have the opportunity to participate in fun, interactive games and activities from the Healthy Habits for Life Resource Kit; developed in partnership with Sesame Workshop, KidsHealth and Nemours. The program is being implemented over a 3 month time span in which we’re teaching lessons around fruits & vegetables, screen time, and physical activity. Each 2nd grade classroom is designing a display board including everything they’ve been learning. During the first visit the kids designed a “fruit rainbow” on their display board while we discussed what fruits they enjoy most and why eating fruit is important. During the second visit the kids created “vegetable soup” on the board by choosing pictures of different vegetables they wanted in their soup. For the 3rd visit we will be teaching a lesson around physical activities they like to do and can do rather than watching TV, playing on the computer, or playing video games. The idea is to get them thinking about the importance of staying active and how it also ties into the earlier lesson plans on eating healthy. At the end of the program, April 20th 2012, the students will display their healthy habits boards to the rest of the school. The program started with a grant opportunity funded through UniedHealth HEROES and Youth Service America and it has now turned in to this sustainable, easily replicated program that can be used to help students in other schools in central Florida.
