L.I. Child and Family Development Services, Inc., d/b/a Long Island Head Start is a 501 ©(3) not for profit organization funded by the Federal Government to support at-risk children and their families. Our mission is to provide a comprehensive learning environment to children, respectful of their cultures; and to assist families in reaching self-sufficiency through the combined efforts of parents, community and staff. We educate, encourage, empower and engage the children and families to make sure they are prepared to live and participate fully in the 21st century. Through our agency, children and families truly get a “Head Start” in life.

Yoga is a form of exercise that integrates brain abilities and body mechanics and is appropriate for all children of all ages and abilities. Our yoga program is integrates scientific principles and yoga techniques to counteract the various stressors that interfere with optimal learning and success in school and life. Incorporating yoga into one’s daily activity promotes health and wellness, improves concentration and focus, enhances creativity, relieves anxiety and improves academic performance.

Head Start emphasizes the importance of nutrition and physical activity in order to address the growing obesity epidemic in our country. Through gardening we are integrating nature into the daily learning experience of Head Start children and helping them understand that food doesn’t come from the supermarket. We are increasing health through physical activity and increased vegetable and fruit consumption. Through gardening our children explore, experience and enjoy nature while encouraging teamwork, cooperation and responsibility and being part of a larger community that cares and shares.

Longs Island Head Start has joined First Lady Michelle Obama across the nation in the fight to prevent childhood obesity.
