Food for the Soul
The District of Columbia ranks in the top 10 of childhood obesity. Faith communities can play an important role in saving our youth and families from diabetes and heart disease.
Located in historic Anacostia within the District of Columbia, members of Saint Teresa of Avila Roman Catholic Church are putting their faith where their food is.
To meet the First Lady Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative, Saint Teresa of Avila implemented Food for the Soul, a faith-based nutrition educational program. In it, participants apply their faith and nutrition education when they cook for their families and shop for groceries.
By the end of the program they create a more Christ-centered kitchen. Out of the Food for the Soul, the Culinary Ministry was born to improve the health and nutrition of Saint Teresa of Avila. The ministry formed an initiative called ‘From Faith to Fork’ that includes a faith-based edible garden along with ‘Cooking for Christ’ menu for Sunday mass. Also it holds a “Last Supper” competition in preparing a healthy plate using Christ’s teachings.
